About the AAMU Writing Project
The Alabama A&M University Writing Project (AAMUWP) is located on the beautiful campus of Alabama A&M University in Normal, Alabama.
General Information
Alabama A&M University Writing Project (AAMU Writing Project) is an affiliate of the National Writing Project (NWP), which has its headquarters at the University of California, Berkeley. The National Writing Project started in 1974 to improve the teaching of writing in schools, kindergarten through college, around the nation. Alabama A&M University Writing Project, which began in 1995, is one of the 197 NWP sites in all of the 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
Like all other sites, the AAMU Writing Project subscribes to the model which is based "on the belief that teachers are the key to education reform, teachers make the best teachers of other teachers, and teachers benefit from studying and conducting research." To this effect, each year the AAMU Writing Project invites teachers from North Alabama to participate in a Summer Invitational Institute (SI) and follows it with other year-round programs. Participants receive a stipend, which they may use to earn graduate credits.
We are excited about teaching, learning, and writing. Please come join us. We invite all of you to share in our successes, guide us through our challenges, and help us to grow, teach, write, share, and learn!

The NWP funding is not secure yet! We need your help, you!
Just a quick note (not to bombard you!) to thank you in advance for any organizing you can do for the letter writing campaign. We want to make sure that the National Writing Project funding is included in the new budget that the House of Representatives might consider next week. To make it easier for teachers, directors and hopefully some third part supporters (university administrators, principals and parents) to write, there are sample letter templates.
Site leaders often mention that it is handy to have the contact information so each individual doesn’t have to look it up. Here is the contact information for Alabama’s members of the House of Representatives.
- Aderholt, Robert, Alabama, 4th
- Bachus, Spencer, Alabama, 6th
- Bonner, Jo, Alabama, 1st
- Brooks, Mo, Alabama, 5th
- Roby, Martha, Alabama, 2nd
- Rogers, Mike, Alabama, 3rd
- Sewell, Terri A., Alabama, 7th
Letters sent via email and fax are the goal for this campaign.
If you have any thoughts or questions, please send them to me. And please thank everyone for helping make our collective NWP work visible to the decision-makers in Congress!
