About the 21st Century Literacies Conference Awakening Words with Confidence: Strengthening Reluctant Readers and Writers
Date: Saturday, March 5, 2011
Time: 9:00 am- 3:00 pm
Where: UAB Campus, Heritage Hall Room 106
Cost: $60 before February 12. $65 on-sight. $30 UAB student (includes registration fee, continental breakfast, and boxed lunch)
This conference is intended for in-service and pre-service teachers of all content areas, teacher educators, and administrators. It deals with developing literacy skills for the 21st century. This year's conference features two keynote speakers who are specialists in the field of literacy: Alfred Tatum and Penny Kittle. Both speakers will give keynote speeches, participate in Q&A sessions, and sign copies of their books. There will also be breakout sessions featuring presenters such as the leaders of the RMWP Young Writers Group that focus on improving literacy in today's classroom. Even lunch time will serve as an opportunity for teachers to engage in fellowship about the profession.
This is a wonderful and relevant opportunity for educators to enter into a dialogue with other professionals and specialists about improving literacy in our classrooms. Please encourage your faculty to participate in the Conference!

Online and In person Music Writing Marathon
On September 10, 2010, teachers from National Writing Project sites from Indiana, Kentucky, and West Virginia will meet at Iroquois Park in Louisville, Kentucky for a 2 hour writing marathon. Participants will write from a music-themed writing prompt (chosen from a list prepared by Paul W. Hankins, a TC with the Indiana University Southeast Writing Project) prior to the event on the 10th. The sharing of these pieces will be the opening activity of the marathon..
After sharing, participants will be invited into writing activities centered around the music of Corey Smith. These will be provided by Crystal Howell and April Estep from the Marshall University Writing Project.
Since everyone can’t join us in Louisville there will be prompts placed in a special group on the NWP iAnthology ning, hosted by Bonnie Kaplan, Co-director and Technology Director with the Hudson Valley Writing Project and Kevin Hodgson, Tech Liaison with the Western Mass Writing Project. These prompts will allow other NWP TCs to share in the experience of a multi-site write.
EVERYONE is invited to be a part of it online marathon.(PRETTY PLEASE!) If you haven’t done so already, become a member of the NWP iAnthology and join the group Musical Musings. There are prompts already up and more will be added September 10th. You do have to apply to become a part of the iAnthology but you should have no trouble.

After the 2 hour marathon, participants are invited to attend a concert by Corey Smith held in the Iroquois Ampitheater.
Thanks a bunch!

Publishing opportunities for NWP teachers
Worlds of Words has two calls for manuscripts for their online journals. These are great publishing opportunities for writing project participants!
WOW Stories: Connections from the Classroom looks for short vignettes that tell the story of how a teacher or librarian connected literature with students in ways that promoted intercultural understandings. WOW Stories: Connections from the Classroom is also looking for literacy and/or writing communities to submit proposals for an issue of the journal around a theme related to their use of multicultural or global literature. The complete call for manuscripts is at http://wowlit.org/on-line-publications/stories/storiesguide/. For more information contact the WOW Stories editor, Dr. Janine M. Schall, at jschall@utpa.edu.
The second journal of Worlds of Words, WOW Review, is seeking critical reviews of multicultural or global children’s and/or adolescent literature. The call for manuscripts is at http://wowlit.org/on-line-publications/review/. For more information contact the WOW Review editor, Dr. Janelle Mathis, at mathis@coe.unt.edu.
